Braintree Says Goodbye to Passwords with One Touch™ Payments for PayPal and Venmo, and Hello to Bitcoin

Today at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, we announced the general availability of One Touch™ mobile payments with PayPal, the industry’s first and only single touch payment experience on iOS (and in public beta on Android). One Touch with Venmo is also in public beta on iOS and Android. Innovative apps like Jane.com, ParkWhiz, StubHub and Type Tees by Threadless, have already enabled One Touch -- the fastest and safest way to pay on a mobile device -- and will be rolling out the newest version of their apps in the coming days. With One Touch, people will be able to pay across their favorite apps in a single touch on any platform, eliminating the need for usernames and passwords each time you pay, while maintaining the trust and security that Braintree and PayPal have long been known for.

While we’re focused on giving people more seamless buying experiences, we’re also fierce advocates of giving merchants -- and in turn their customers -- flexibility and the freedom of choice. That’s why today, we also announced that we’ll enable our customers to easily accept bitcoin in the coming months via a partnership with Coinbase -- a trusted, high quality bitcoin payment processor with 1.6M consumer wallets and 36,000 merchants globally. As we make bitcoin available, our v.zero SDK will make it seamless for developers and merchants to add bitcoin to their existing payment methods and provide an elegant, adaptive user interface for consumers to pay in bitcoin with their Coinbase wallet (request access to the upcoming beta).

At Braintree, we’ve been an open platform from the beginning, striving to give merchants easy access to the most sophisticated payment tools, which now includes the most relevant wallets across platforms -- all via a single integration, the Braintree v.zero SDK.  Today, this includes PayPal, with over 150M active digital wallets, Venmo, which is processing more than $1.5B in mobile payment volume annually, Coinbase in the coming months, and whatever is relevant for developers and merchants in the future.

When we launched the Braintree v.zero SDK as the modern foundation for accepting payments, we did so with the future of payments in mind.  That included our view that buying experiences, especially on mobile, would continue to evolve rapidly and more payment methods would become relevant around the globe.  We made the promise to developers that new features and payment methods that we would later add into the SDK would be easily accessible and simple to integrate so that businesses could quickly get new products and payment methods into the hands of their customers. Today, we’re making good on that promise. And this is just the beginning. As we add new mobile buying experiences and payment methods to our SDK in the future, merchants using v.zero can add just a couple lines of code, check a button, and add a new payment method or feature in minutes, and consumers can get quick access to these new experiences.

One Touch is currently available to U.S.-based merchants, but we’ll be rolling the feature out to our merchants internationally in the next few months. For more information on Braintree’s partnership with Coinbase, get in touch with us here.
